be unconquered

Abdu Ali Eaton of fashion blog fame will be releasing his first music project this coming summer. Entitled “Invictus” (meaning "unconquered" for all you non-Latin speakers), Abdu’s project embraces identity, being an individual, and living life to the fullest with no mercy.

“This project represents the struggles of being an outcast, a minority, and a victim of oppression,” he says. “I believe that being pushed to the outskirts of society, living in the darkest alleys, and, in some cases, being socially jailed, pushes a person or a community to be liberated, claiming true freedom. This freedom births beautiful subcultures seen from the gay community to the African American community.”

I asked Abdu if he thinks of Invictus as something handmade. “Well, first and foremost, I am a writer. Whether I am expressing myself through poetry, editorial journalism or music, it's all about the physiology of words. So with this project I'm creating “handmade” melodies, rhythms, and lyrics that express a particular meaning. It's all about piecing a puzzle together with words, and then setting them to music so that anyone who listens can understand that meaning.”
